Custom Build Pricing Guide
Every commission is different, so pricing starts with a conversation, not a price list. This guide walks through what shapes the cost of a custom piece, so you can come to me with a good sense of what to expect before you ever fill out a request.
What Goes Into the Price?
Materials
The type of wood, amount of material, and any specialty materials needed for your project all factor into the final price. Common options include:
Pine is a budget-friendly softwood. Best for functional or lightweight pieces
Red Oak is a warm-toned hardwood. Best for decorative pieces.
White Oak is rot-resistant hardwood, best for decor or moisture-contact pieces.
Maple is a cream hardwood, best for sturdy pieces
Mahogany is a rich-toned hardwood, best for decor pieces.
Walnut is a dark brown hardwood, best for decor pieces
Exotic woods such as Purple Heart or Paudak will vary in price and use cases
Fewer dots = more budget-friendly · more dots = premium material
Labor
Your project is handmade from start to finish. Labor accounts for the time required for:
- Designing and planning
- Cutting and shaping
- Joinery and assembly
- Engraving
- Sanding
- Finishing
- Final preparation
Hardware & Supplies
Things like hinges, screws, adhesives, finish, sandpaper, and other supplies are included in the project estimate.
Customization
More intricate designs, detailed engraving, unusual dimensions, or specialized construction can increase the total cost.

The Process

Send a sketch, photo, inspiration, measurements, or simply describe what you're imagining.
We'll work out the details
We'll discuss dimensions, wood species, design, finish, hardware, and anything else needed to make the project work.
Receive your estimate
I'll provide a clear estimate based on the materials and work involved.
50% deposit
Once you're ready to move forward, a 50% deposit secures your spot and allows me to begin purchasing materials and preparing the project.
I build
Your piece is made by hand in the Root & Branch workshop.
Final payment & delivery
Once the project is complete, the remaining balance is due before pickup or shipment.
